The Healing Powers of Pomorie, Bulgaria

The climate balneology abilities of Pomorie (??????? in Bulgarian) /Anhialo/ have been used since forgotten times. A Bey, called Selim, settled down in Anhialo (the old name of Pomorie) during the 18th century and built a large farm. He suffered from an incurable disease. One day, his farm-hand, old Neno, had a strange dream. He told his master. He had dreamed about a handsome young man, bearing the name St. George and miraculous spring water in the estate. Old Neno tried to check his dream. He dig up the place in the yard, that he dreamed about. He dig out a slab with the face of St. George painted on it. When he removed the slab, water started to spring from the hole. Selim Bey called the bishop to sanctify the place. The place was sanctified and the sick landowner was poured on with the healing water. He was suddenly healed.. He and his whole family became converted to Christianity and built a chapel in his property. Time passed and he became a widower. He dedicated him self to monkhood and gave out his domain to build a monastery. The monastery of Pomorie “St. George” was built with Selim’s money.

The founding of the slab and the spring water beneath is, as well as the miraculous healing of Selim Bey prove, that the healing qualities of the area have been used for eras. Nowadays, Pomorie is a center of medical tourism. The world famous firth healing mud, gathered by the nearby Pomoriisko Lake(70% saltiness) , is used.
