Scotland, Vacations With A Difference
Scotland has some of the most astounding countryside to be found in the U.K. making it the greatest holiday destination. The majority of visitors to Scotland opt for the City of Edinburgh for their main destination, while a smaller number opt for something a bit different. The following examines vacations in Scotland and a selection of things to do while in Scotland. I also introduces the Wickerman Festival.
With such an amazingly diverse countryside the range of things to do is endless. Climbing mountains is highly popular, as are mountain biking vacations. The most popular vacations are fishing or golf. With Scotland being the place of origin of the sport of golf it should not surprise you that that you are never too far from a minimum of one world class golf course. With the Rivers Tweed, Tay and Spey you almost guaranteed of a superb days fishing. But what if you fancy something a little different?
A growing number of folk are making music festivals their yearly vacation. Even though most music festivals are incredibly large with the main aim of making cash, there exists a small number of music festivals geared towards families, such as Tartan Heart and the Wickerman Festival.
More of a music and arts festival, the annual Wickerman festival takes place on a farm close to Dundrennan in the heart of Dumfries & Galloway roughly 5 miles away from Kirkcudbright, Scotland. The event celebrates the cult film “The Wicker Man which features appearances by Edward Woodward, Christopher Lee, Ingrid Pitt, Britt Ekland and Diane Cilento.
The very first festival took place in July two thousand and two and was created by Sid Ambrose, a local guy. With next to no experience of putting together a very large event it is amazing that it still exists, especially when you consider the present economic climate. The festival has changed each year and, like the film, has a cult following.
Wickerman is incredibly family friendly it features numerous activities for children for example, numerous fairground rides, a mountain biking trek, workshops and face painting. This fact can be easily proven by searching Google, Yahoo and MSN for Wickerman 2009 photographs or alternatively visit the official Wickerman Festival Gallery.
Not too far from the site of the festival is the village of Kirkudbright where you will find many locations used in the film including Harbour Cottage which was used for the bakery and High Street Gallery (post office and sweetshop of May Morrison). You will find that there are a great many places worth visiting in the area and it is well worth taking a short break here so that you may visit all of the visitor attractions. Common places in which to stay include Castle Douglas and Dumfries. Bed and breakfast in Scotland is always first class and is also very reasonably priced and far cheaper than staying in a hotel.
